Crypto mines puts a 5 by 5 grid in front of you. Somewhere under those 25 tiles sit a number of mines you chose. Click a tile: if it's a gem, your multiplier goes up and you can keep going or cash out. If it's a mine, the round ends and the stake is gone.
It looks like a puzzle. It isn't one. There's no information to gather and no pattern to read. Every tile you haven't opened is equally likely to hide a mine.
What there is, though, is very clean arithmetic. We popped the hood on how the multipliers are built, where the house edge hides, and which "strategies" are just superstition with a spreadsheet attached.
Where to play crypto mines in 2026
Mines is almost always an in-house "original" at crypto casinos. That usually means a provably fair system, a low operator-set edge and tiny minimum stakes in any coin the cashier holds. The list below draws on our full Haxies Index across 17 casinos, with partner casinos featured first and badged. The Index scores bonus clearing cost, stated payout speed and licensing cover. It isn't a Mines score.
Partner casinos are listed first. Every casino's Haxies Index score is calculated the same way and is never changed for money.

Our brand data confirms provably fair originals at two of the 17. The BC.Game review records 74 provably fair Originals, including a Crash game at a stated 99% RTP. Betpanda also markets provably fair originals. For the rest, the data we hold doesn't list individual in-house games, so search the lobby for "Mines" before depositing.
The best crypto casinos with the highest Index scores are those with cheap-to-clear offers, fast stated payouts and full licence and owner disclosure. That's a sensible home for a Mines balance. The Mines edge itself you read from the game, and the method below shows how.
How does crypto mines work?
Crypto mines hides a chosen number of mines among 25 tiles. Each gem you reveal raises your multiplier. The fair multiplier after k safe picks equals 1 divided by the chance of surviving those k picks. The casino then trims that by its house edge. You cash out any time; hit a mine and you lose the stake.
That's the core idea. Here's what it looks like with real numbers.
Pick 3 mines. There are 22 safe tiles out of 25. Your first click survives with probability 22 in 25, which is 88%. A fair game would pay 1 divided by 0.88, about 1.136x. With a 1% edge, it pays about 1.125x.
Click again. Now 21 safe tiles remain out of 24. Surviving both picks has probability (22/25) x (21/24), which is 77%. Fair payout about 1.30x.
Keep going and the multiplier compounds. Each pick is a little riskier than the last, because the mines stay put while safe tiles run out.
The board is fixed before you click
At a provably fair Mines game, mine positions are derived from seeds before the round begins. Clicking a tile doesn't move anything. The order you click in only decides how fast you discover where the mines already were.
The multiplier maths, worked through
The general formula is short. With m mines on a 25-tile grid and k safe picks:
Fair multiplier = C(25, k) / C(25 - m, k)
C(n, k) is "n choose k", the number of ways to pick k tiles from n. The top counts all ways to pick k tiles. The bottom counts the ways to pick k tiles that are all safe. Their ratio is 1 divided by your survival chance.
Multiply the fair figure by (1 minus the house edge) and you get what the game displays.
Multiplier table at a 1% edge
| Mines | Picks | Survival chance | Fair multiplier | At 1% edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 96.0% | 1.042x | 1.031x |
| 3 | 1 | 88.0% | 1.136x | 1.125x |
| 3 | 3 | 66.96% | 1.494x | 1.479x |
| 3 | 5 | 49.57% | 2.017x | 1.997x |
| 3 | 10 | 19.78% | 5.055x | 5.004x |
| 5 | 5 | 29.18% | 3.427x | 3.393x |
| 5 | 10 | 5.65% | 17.69x | 17.52x |
| 10 | 3 | 19.78% | 5.055x | 5.004x |
| 24 | 1 | 4.0% | 25x | 24.75x |
Check any row. Survival chance times the 1%-edge multiplier is always about 0.99. That's the price. It doesn't move with mine count or number of picks.
A neat symmetry
Look at "3 mines, 10 picks" and "10 mines, 3 picks". Same survival chance, same multiplier. Picking 10 safe tiles with 3 mines out there is the same counting problem as dodging 10 mines with 3 picks. Different feel, identical odds.
Reading the house edge from the screen
You can find any Mines game's edge yourself in under a minute.
- Set a mine count and note the multiplier shown for your first pick.
- Work out survival chance for that first pick: (25 minus mines) divided by 25.
- Multiply the two numbers together.
- Subtract the result from 1.
With 3 mines, survival is 0.88. If the first-pick multiplier shows 1.125x, then 0.88 x 1.125 = 0.99, so the edge is 1%. If it shows 1.11x, then 0.88 x 1.11 is about 0.977, an edge of about 2.3%.
Operators set this edge themselves. Many in-house originals aim for about 1%, but you shouldn't assume it. Check before playing.
Comparing Mines with similar games
Mines sits alongside crypto dice and Plinko as an instant game with an operator-set edge. Dice shows its edge most openly, because the payout formula sits right on the bet slip. Plinko buries its edge inside a paytable you have to sum. Mines shows it through the multiplier ladder, which takes one multiplication to check. Across the wider set of crypto casino games, slots typically run 2% to 6%, so a 1% Mines game is cheap by comparison.
Mine count: picking your risk
The mine count is the main dial. It changes how steep the multiplier ladder is.
1 to 3 mines. Gentle. Early picks survive most of the time and pay small amounts. You can click many tiles before the multiplier gets interesting. Long sessions on small budgets.
4 to 10 mines. Middle ground. A handful of picks takes you to 3x or 5x, with roughly even odds of busting along the way.
11 to 24 mines. Steep. Two or three picks can reach big multipliers, but most rounds end on the first or second click. At 24 mines there's one gem; finding it pays about 24.75x at a 1% edge, and you'll miss 24 times in 25 on average.
The cost is identical across the dial
Expected return per dollar staked is about 99% at a 1% edge, whatever the mine count. Choosing 1 mine doesn't make the game cheaper. It makes it smoother.
Cashout timing: the only real decision
Mines gives you a choice after every safe tile: take the money or click again. It feels like that decision has value. It doesn't, at least not in the long run.
Every possible stopping point returns the same expected amount per dollar staked. Stopping after two picks at 3 mines returns about 99%. Stopping after ten returns about 99%. You're choosing a point on a curve where every point has the same average.
Why it feels different
Stopping early wins often and small. Going deep wins rarely and big. Human brains are bad at feeling those as equal. The maths says they are.
Plan your stop before the round
Decide "3 mines, 5 picks, then cash out" before you click. That turns Mines into a fixed bet: about 49.6% to win, paying about 2x at a 1% edge. Making the call mid-round is where greed and frustration creep in.
Provably fair: how the grid is set
Provably fair systems let you prove the mine positions were fixed before you played and weren't moved afterwards.
The usual inputs:
- Server seed: secret, generated by the casino. You see its hash before play.
- Client seed: a string you set.
- Nonce: a counter that rises by one per bet.
The game hashes these together and turns the output into a shuffled order of the 25 tiles. The first m positions in that order are the mines. Same inputs, same board, every time.
How to verify a round
- Note the hashed server seed in the fairness panel before playing.
- Set your own client seed.
- Play your rounds.
- Rotate the seed pair so the old server seed is revealed.
- Hash the revealed server seed with SHA-256 in an independent tool and compare it with the hash from step 1.
- Use the casino's verifier, or an independent script, to rebuild each board from seed, client seed and nonce. Compare mine positions with your history.
If the hashes don't match, the casino changed its seed after committing. Raise it with support and then with the licensing authority.
The limit of proof
Provably fair shows the board wasn't changed. It doesn't tell you the edge is fair, the casino pays out, or that clicking order matters. It doesn't.
Strategy myths in crypto mines
Mines draws more folklore per square inch than any other game. Here are the common ones.
"Corners are safer"
Every unopened tile has exactly the same chance of hiding a mine. There's no geography. The board is a shuffled list, drawn as a grid for display.
"Click the same pattern every time"
Patterns feel like control. The mine positions are random each round, so any fixed pattern performs exactly like any other.
"After a loss on tile X, avoid tile X"
Last round's board has no effect on this round's board. A new nonce gives a new shuffle.
"Changing my client seed resets my luck"
A new client seed gives a new sequence of boards. It isn't better or worse, just different.
"Mines predictors and bots"
The board is set by a server seed that's hidden until you rotate it. No app can see it. Anything that claims to show you safe tiles is either guessing or after your account. Never type your casino login, wallet seed phrase or two-factor codes into a third-party tool.
Betting systems on Mines
Players often pair Mines with doubling systems. The arithmetic is the same as at any other game.
Martingale at roughly 50%
Set 3 mines and 5 picks for about a 49.6% win and a roughly 2x payout. Double after each loss. The chance of 8 straight losses is 0.504 to the power of 8, about 0.42%. Small per sequence. Over hundreds of rounds, likely to happen. Eight losses from a $1 start means $255 staked, and the next bet is $256.
And because the payout sits just under 2x at a 1% edge, a long losing run doesn't quite break even when the win finally comes.
The edge stays put
Every bet in the system carries the same edge. Higher stakes mean higher turnover, so a larger expected loss in dollars. You've swapped steady small losses for rare large ones.
Bonus wagering and Mines
Welcome bonuses are built for slots. Mines is in the "other games" bucket at most casinos, with low or zero contribution.
From our brand data: Bets.io counts slots at 100% and other games at 5%. Betpanda counts slots at 100%, live games at 20%, other games at 0%.
A worked example
Take a $100 bonus at 40x on the bonus: $4,000 of required turnover. On a slot with about a 2% edge, the expected cost is about $80. That's our Clear benchmark.
On Mines at 5% contribution, you'd need $80,000 of play to count as $4,000. At a 1% edge, expected cost is about $800. At 0% contribution it never clears.
Terms often also flag low-risk patterns, such as 1-mine, 1-pick rounds, as bonus abuse. That can void winnings. The Bets.io review notes a 2 USDT max bet while a bonus is active. Keep Mines on cash.
A better fit for Mines players
Wager-free returns suit low-edge games better than match bonuses. Cocobet states 50% first-week cashback on net losses, paid wager-free, and Winna offers instant rakeback. The Winna review explains how its rakeback is based on 5% of theoretical loss.
Coins, fees and withdrawals
Mines stakes are often small, so fees on deposits and withdrawals can outweigh your expected game cost for a session.
Stablecoins keep the maths honest: a 2x cashout in USDT is 2x in dollars. Low-fee networks such as TRC-20 for USDT, or Litecoin, suit small top-ups. Our list of dogecoin casinos shows which brands confirm DOGE, another low-fee option many cashiers accept. Bitcoin on-chain fees swing with mempool congestion; BC.Game and Betpanda confirm Lightning.
For withdrawals, stated speeds vary. Cybet, Cocobet, Winna, TrustDice, CasinoCrypto.io and Crypto-Games.io state instant payouts; Jack states under 5 minutes. Our ranking of fast payout crypto casinos compares all 17 and flags published caps. These are the operators' stated speeds. Every casino in the list passed the Haxies group's multi-source testing and Team Lead Harrison Ayla's interview before being listed.
Caps worth knowing
BC.Game publishes €10,000 per month. Betpanda publishes €5,000 per 24 hours, €15,000 per week and €45,000 per month. Winna publishes $10,000 per 24 hours. Bets.io publishes deposit-linked daily caps of 1,000 to 3,000 USDT. A deep run at 10 mines can exceed those, so know your limit before you start.
A sample session, priced
Say you play 200 rounds of 3 mines, 5 picks, at $1 a round. That's $200 of turnover. At a 1% edge, expected cost is about $2. You'll win roughly 99 of those rounds at about 2x and lose the rest, so most sessions finish within $20 or so of break-even either way.
Now play the same $200 as 200 rounds of 5 mines, 10 picks. You'd expect about 11 wins at roughly 17.5x. Same $2 expected cost, but the spread of results is far wider: plenty of sessions end $60 down, and a few end well up.
Mistakes to avoid
- Assuming 1% edge everywhere. Check the first-pick multiplier against survival odds.
- Deciding when to stop mid-round. Plan picks before you click.
- Believing in safe tiles. Every unopened tile has the same chance.
- Running auto-play with no loss stop. Set it before you press start.
- Playing with a bonus live. Low contribution and abuse clauses work against you.
- Sharing account details with predictor apps. They're scams.
- Chasing a big multiplier after a run of busts. The next board doesn't know your history.
Is crypto mines legal for you?
It depends on where you live, and in some places on your region. Each casino also publishes a restricted-country list. Check both before signing up.
Licences differ across our 17 brands. Most publish an Anjouan or Curaçao licence number; Winna lists the Tobique Gaming Commission; Betpanda publishes no gambling licence, only a Costa Rica company registration. For privacy, our list of no KYC crypto casinos records what each brand states about checks at signup and at withdrawal.
Keeping Mines in check
Mines rounds take seconds. Auto-play makes them faster still, and crypto deposits land without bank friction. Use deposit limits, session timers and cooling-off tools, and step away between sessions. Setting up responsible crypto gambling tools early is easier than doing it mid-session, and Gambling Therapy offers free, confidential support worldwide.
Crypto mines questions
Is crypto mines rigged?
At a provably fair Mines game, the board is set from seeds before you click, and you can rebuild it after rotating seeds. That proves positions weren't moved. Check the house edge separately using the first-pick multiplier.
What is the house edge in Mines?
It's set by each operator. Many in-house versions aim for about 1%. Multiply the first-pick multiplier by the survival chance, then subtract from 1, to find the edge yourself.
How are Mines multipliers calculated?
The fair multiplier equals 1 divided by your chance of surviving all picks so far, which is C(25, k) divided by C(25 minus mines, k). The game then reduces it by the house edge.
How many mines should I choose?
Pick for the ride you want. Few mines give smooth, small wins; many mines give rare, large wins. The expected return per dollar staked is the same at every setting.
Are corner tiles safer in Mines?
No. Every unopened tile has the same chance of being a mine. The grid is a shuffled list displayed as squares.
Do Mines predictor apps work?
No. Mine positions come from a hidden server seed, so nobody outside the casino can see them. Predictor apps are guesses or account-stealing scams.
Can I clear a bonus playing Mines?
Rarely in a useful way. In our brand data, Bets.io counts other games at 5% and Betpanda at 0%, and low-risk Mines patterns can breach bonus terms. Clear bonuses on slots.
What are the odds of hitting 5 safe tiles with 3 mines?
About 49.6%. The fair multiplier is about 2.02x, and at a 1% edge the game pays about 2x.
